Tutor Trend Interview

Name of your website?

Tutor Trend

Your name?

Dan Uechi

Your Location (city, etc)

Pleasanton

Please give us a short summary of your website?

This site is for tutors, teachers, parents and students who are interested in becoming tutors, starting a tutoring business, want to hire a tutor or have general education related questions.~~

What inspired you to launch your own website?

I started my own tutoring company 5 years ago, and it's been wonderful. I've accumulated 5 years of topics that tutors, parents, schools and students should know about tutoring and education in general, and felt this would he a great forum.

When did you launch your first website, and what was it?

This is my first website, and it's been a massive learning experience.

How did you decide on a name for your website?

This was a difficult decision. I wanted a short, non-hyphenated, catchy name, and this was the best one available at the time.

What makes your website different from other, similar offerings?

My website is a bit broader in coverage. I primarily talk about tutoring, but I also include topics such as college planning and acceptance tips, talking to kids, studying techniques and tips. I think these ancillary topics are just as important for people who want to learn how to learn.

What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)

I hope to keep it forever. Sooner or later I'll need to monitize the site, but I want to provide as much relevant, free material as possible.

How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?

I'm still a newbie. I have to admit, it has been very time consuming, but when you're writing about something you enjoy, the time isn't much of a negative factor. I hope the site becomes a regular resource for students, parents and tutors.

If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?

The one thing I would change is to have someone eles in charge of the design of my website. I've seen some really beautiful and cutting edge sites, and would love to have something similar.

If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?

I think so. Although I keep a very busy schedule, I would love to see the site grow and become a useful tool for others.

What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?

No unexpected costs so far, but I'm sure I'll have some.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Making myself sit down to write. I have a tendency to try to make things perfect before I put it out for public view. What this process has taught me is to get the information out there first, then make corrections and issue apologies later.

What method has been most successful for promoting your website?

I've just started applying for listings in directories. I've got about a million more things I need to try.

How has running your website differed from your expectations?

It hasn't been as hard as I expected. I was afraid all of the technical mumbo jumbo would slow me down, but I've been very lucky so far.

How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?

I started my site in May 2009. I'll keep on it until I die.

What is your website address?

Tutor Trend
